Georgetown University Interventional Radiology Care Team

James B. Spies, MD Dr. Spies is Professor of Radiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he serves as Chairman and Chief of Service of the Department of Radiology. He attended medical school at Georgetown, completed residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California at San Francisco and fellowship in Interventional Radiology at New York University. He served in the Air Force as chief of Interventional Radiology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center from 1985 to 1989. Subsequently, he was in private practice in interventional radiology until January of 1997, when he joined the faculty at Georgetown. He leads the Georgetown Uterine Fibroid Embolization Program, one of the largest and most experienced in the United States, with over 1800 women treated to date. Dr. Spies is recognized as a world authority on uterine embolization, having given over 120 invited lectures on UFE to physicians and others interested in this procedure. He has written over 55 research studies or reviews, 5 book chapters and has edited a textbook on this procedure. He has also served on several national committees related to this treatment. Michael F. McCullough, M.D. Dr. Michael McCullough is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. McCullough received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, graduating in 1996. He completed an internship in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital in 2001 and a fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital in 2002. During his fellowship, Dr. McCullough’s special interest was in uterine fibroid embolization and he participated in over 300 procedures during that time. He continued this interest, as well as broadened his experience, in practice at Association of Alexandria Radiologists for 3 years. In 2005, Dr. McCullough returned to rejoin the uterine fibroid embolization team at Georgetown.
Michelle French, CNP Michelle French graduated from Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania in 1994 and has had extensive experience as a nurse practicing in both medical and surgical units. She completed a Maters of Nursing in Adult/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner at the University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She worked at Genetics and IVF Institute for 2 years as a nurse practitioner in their infertility program. She joined the Uterine Embolization program at Georgetown University Hospital in September of 2001. She actively participates in initial patient evaluation and manages patient follow-up.
